FCEM&HS Encourages Residents to Participate in the Ohio Safe Room Rebate Program

Franklin County Emergency Management and Homeland Security (FCEM&HS) encourages Franklin County residents to participate in the Ohio Safe Room Rebate Program.  The program provides a rebate for the purchase and construction/installation of safe rooms for Ohio homeowners.

Safe rooms are shelters that can withstand extremely high winds and provide life-safety protection for people during tornadoes and severe weather events. Safe rooms can be built in one of several places inside the home: in the basement, beneath a concrete foundation or garage floor, or in an interior room on the first floor. Additionally, safe rooms can be buried in the yard close to the home or installed above ground.

The Ohio Safe Room Rebate Program provides reimbursement for up to 75 percent of the cost to construct/install a safe room - up to a maximum of $4,875.  Homeowners will be responsible for 25 percent of the cost and any additional costs above the maximum rebate amount. Franklin County residents can register for the program by visiting www.ema.ohio.gov and clicking on Ohio EMA Safe Room Rebate Program. Deadline to register for the program is March 10, 2017 at 5:00 p.m.

The program will utilize a random computerized selection process to determine who will receive the rebate.  A priority list of applicants will be created from the computerized selected applicants.  Chosen homeowners will be notified of their position on the priority list by the Ohio EMA through e-mail on or after March 13, 2017.  Safe rooms must meet FEMA requirements in accordance to FEMA publications 320 and 361, and cannot be constructed or installed prior to the rebate drawing.

Funding for rebate program is provided through the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Hazard Mitigation Assistance (HMA) Grant Program.

Franklin County Emergency Management and Homeland Security, a local government agency, coordinates county-wide emergency/disaster planning, education, warning, response and recovery.
